Independent source and package review · September 12, 2026 (America/New_York)
Metropolitan adds destination-driven navigation, a connected driving assistant, Pit Crew repair and refuel, and targeted traffic changes to Shutoko. These are the features in the current AC Mods offering.
This is a desk review of actual code, release contents, and the baseline’s own documentation—not a new driving test. “Different” does not automatically mean “better.” The reviewed archive matched the public release metadata. Private development paths and source files are excluded from this public edition.
What is being compared
- Shutoko alone: the underlying Tokyo expressway track and scenery. Metro uses the existing world; it does not add a new road network. SRP official site.
- Shutoko with 2REAL: the track plus an established traffic and activity system. Police, helicopters, pedestrians, deformation, races, progression, maps, and traffic reactions already exist in this baseline. 2REAL guide.
- Reviewed customer build: 0.3.0-rc14, checked against its pinned customer ZIP. Its optional traffic patch retains rc13’s behavior and targets exact supported 2REAL 2.1.1 source fingerprints.
- Local Metro: the installed development setup has additional changes. Those are explicitly separated below.
Navigation and the driving assistant
- Destination routing — customer core: choose a supported landmark and calculate a road route from the car or another landmark, with maneuver distance and arrival state. The distinction is destination planning, beyond merely displaying a minimap.
- Connected copilot — customer core: exposes car telemetry, navigation, and compatible career/pursuit state to a desktop assistant, including supported route commands. Voice runs through the separate desktop client; information is read in snapshots.
- More places and steadier map controls — rc14 customer core: 83 visible destinations, a destination dropdown, clickable markers, configurable right-button panning, and an expanded map view. Retired IDs remain addressable for old saves. The bundled assistant catalog uses the same stable IDs.
- Bidirectional GPS — rc14 customer core: route planning can use connected roads in either direction and give turnaround guidance. Original road elevations and explicit connections are retained; stacked or disconnected roads are not joined. Traffic vehicle driving rules are unchanged.
Traffic behavior
- Local lane reservations — customer traffic patch: eligible lane changes reserve their space, allowing separate maneuvers while rejecting conflicting reservations. Lane changes themselves already belong to 2REAL.
- Predictive braking and evasive steering — customer traffic patch: forecasts player conflicts and can attempt a checked adjacent-lane escape; braking remains the fallback when the supported path cannot be established.
- Rolling merges — customer traffic patch: plans a gap earlier and adjusts approach speed within bounds, so eligible expressway merges can keep moving. Blocked or unreachable gaps still require stopping.
- Reduced disappearance — customer traffic patch: protects nearby or visible cars from specified cleanup paths and protects oncoming cars while passing. This is targeted lifecycle repair, not permanent traffic persistence.
- Smoother nearby rotation — customer traffic patch: extends full-rate heading updates from 40 to 200 metres, particularly relevant to long vehicles. It does not establish a frame-rate gain or eliminate every stutter.
- Sharper reactions — local: more abrupt frontal lane escapes, separate rear-approach responses, and a targeted headlight-yield controller. Newer civilian player-safety checks reject occupied gaps and retain braking when a checked escape is unavailable. These experiments remain outside rc14.
Police and collisions
- Fair-pursuit option — customer traffic patch: removes identified player-speed matching, gap boosts, and lane-pursuit catch-up shortcuts while retaining vehicle/configured caps. Police can consequently lose ground or get stranded at lane ends.
- Different patrol mix and pace — local: a reduced roaming-patrol schedule and Crown Victoria/Charger performance profiles alongside the Supra. Profiles change the AI’s acceleration/braking envelope; they are not full vehicle physics.
- Less scripted collision lift — local: removes a random upward takeover force and the vertical part of a police impact boost. Native driving evidence is still needed to establish how much popping or flipping this fixes.
Convenience and integration
- One driving panel — customer core: map, traffic controls, Pit Crew and assistant settings share the Metro app. Many traffic settings still operate 2REAL’s existing controls.
- Pit Crew — customer core: full repair/refuel and a bindable repair action support longer offline sessions. Rc14 adds SET FUEL for a selected total tank amount, limited to the car’s capacity. Fuel adjustment is offline only, disabled in replays, and invalidates the current lap.
- Controlled patch installation — customer package: exact-source compatibility checks, backups, and guarded restoration make the traffic modifications inspectable and reversible. Compatible TrafficTool source and assets are still required separately.
What should not be claimed as Metro inventions
- Police and helicopters: already in 2REAL; Metro changes selected pursuit rules. 2REAL police guide.
- Yielding to headlights, lane changes, or reactive traffic: already advertised by 2REAL. Metro’s distinction is its particular controller, constraints, and tuning. 2REAL official site.
- Campaigns, progression, or maps in general: 2REAL already provides racing campaigns, rank/score systems, and a phone minimap. Metro’s specific additions include destination routing and the assistant bridge. 2REAL updates, phone guide.
- A full physics or multiplayer replacement: the reviewed Metro traffic controls target offline solo driving. The continuous native-physics traffic trial was withdrawn after cars launched during a drive; it is not an available benefit.
Review judgment
- Strongest distinction: destination navigation and assistant support alongside in-game repair, refuel and traffic controls.
- Meaningful but experimental: reservations, rolling merges, visibility-aware cleanup, and reduced pursuit shortcuts are identifiable code changes. Their overall driving quality remains unproven by this review.
- Main tradeoff: more interconnected features and exact-version dependencies, with local development ahead of customer contents and some documentation behind both.
- Defensible short description: “Metropolitan turns supported Shutoko drives into destination-led journeys, with a connected copilot, built-in repair and refuel, plus targeted changes to 2REAL traffic.”
Availability update — September 13, 2026
Tokyo Nightshift is temporarily unavailable while it is redesigned. Metropolitan is the current AC Mods offering. Nightshift’s separate career and roadside decisions are excluded from this comparison of available features.
Metropolitan rc14 update — September 13, 2026
Rc14 brings the map controls, expanded waypoint catalog, bidirectional GPS, fuel-only control and shared tab styling into the customer package. Routing, map and Pit Crew checks run against the extracted ZIP; traffic payloads and the compatibility checker retain rc13’s exact bytes. Automatic Home spawning and newer traffic experiments remain local. These are package and mocked behavior checks; in-game appearance and driving validation remain pending.
